Obviously, there’s no shortage of all-natural sleep remedies and way too many more sleep aid products that contain ingredients no one should ingest. So it’s clear why so many of us intend to avoid prescription medications, and even most over counter sleep aids as well due to the undesirable side effects of both.
For instance, Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) products like Ambien and Lunesta target the GABA receptors in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that improves relaxation and induces sleep, however, serious side effects range from hallucinations to blackouts.
Benzodiazepines are psychotropic drugs like Xanax, Valium, Librium and Ativan and also trigger these GAMA receptors intending to relieve anxiety and sedate the user. However, as most of us are becoming increasingly aware of family, friends, work associates and public figures who have become seriously addicted to these prescription meds. The numbers of those addicted continue to increase – even to epidemic proportions widely publicized in certain parts of the U.S.
Antihistamines like Advil PM, Dramamine, and Benadryl are over counter sleep aids that are largely ineffective for most of us with insomnia problems. Apparently driven by advertising and the placebo effect, unintended consequences are often gastrointestinal problems, constipation, and mild nausea accompanied by general dryness of mouth and sinus membranes often followed by day-after symptoms like fatigue and confusion is common. Sound familiar? Anyone want more of that??
No problem, how about increased risk of dementia and forms of Mild Cognitive Impairment? Justifiably, these results are not desirable and more informed and discerning consumers now seek all natural sleeping remedies.
