CBD and Sleep

Using CBD for Insomnia & Sleep Disorders

Largely with the help of my friend and colleague Rachel Hudson, this article will give you a better understanding of why the many benefits from CBD oil have been so highly praised in recent times.  The main focus will be directed on the attention CBD is receiving as a natural treatment for insomnia and sleep disorders.  The overall health and lifestyle benefits include its ability to help you enjoy the full night’s rest that your body needs.

It is unlikely that you have not yet heard of the new wonder molecule commonly called CBD (aka: cannabidiol) considering the staggering popularity it has attained in recent years.  In case you did not, let me tell you that this wonderful medicine may just rock your world with its plethora of health benefits and incredible efficiency in treating sleep disorders. Now, CBD and sleep have taken the world market by storm.

A decade ago, barely anyone knew of it, whereas now it has secured its place in our culture.  Many people are already reaping the wonderful benefits it brings to their table and quality of life.  If you are not one of them yet, let us take a closer look at why you should try it.

What Is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid that is derived from the Cannabis plant. It is one of over a hundred such molecules that various strains of the plant produce naturally.  Contrary to popular opinion, the Cannabis plant does not have to always get you “high”.  In fact,

Cannabidiol affects the body in many beneficial ways but is not psychoactive in any disorienting regard.  It is available in traditional hemp oil formulations as well as advanced, nano-sized CBD utilizing nanotechnology.  Generally speaking, CBD for insomnia and sleep disorders works in the most natural way to help induce a calm and tranquil mindset in the user.

It is known to be very effective in combating depressive moods due to its positive impact on serotonin, an essential hormone produced by our endocrine systems.

Cannabis and CBD

One of the many reasons why CBD has gained so much popularity is its effectiveness at helping with a very wide variety of disorders.  These range from skin conditions like eczema, to pain relief, anxiety & depression, autoimmune diseases, epileptic seizures, and many more.  Last but not least, it is known to excel in effectiveness when it comes to the treatment of insomnia.

What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia is broadly classified as the difficulty to fall asleep and stay asleep for the whole duration of the night, even when conditions allow doing so.  People who suffer from it can fail to get adequate rest and therefore experience a lower quality of life due to various insomnia symptoms.

These include but are not limited to low energy, mood disorders, chronic fatigue, an inability to focus, and a decreased efficiency when working.  According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 40 million people in the USA suffer from it annually, making it the most common sleep disorder in the country.  63% of women and 59% of men report difficulty sleeping at least a few nights per week.

There can be many various reasons for insomnia that stack up and end up in an underwhelming nightly rest.  Stress is among the most common causes.  Worrying about daily concerns, work, or personal related problems are widely recognized problems resulting in the inability to fall asleep.

Most people will know first-hand that worry can be hard to avoid when life comes crashing down, pandemics rule common sense and science, business failure, unemployment higher than The Great Depression (the older ones in the 1930s), and the list is just getting longer.  Perhaps easier said than done, but it is of utmost importance to circumvent the negative thought pattern before it takes a deep hold.  This can be achieved by various calming practices such as yoga and meditation, but also effectively through biologically-based methods, as with the help of herbal medicines like CBD.

CBD and Sleep

These can put the body and mind at ease from the nerve cell on up and throughout the systems of the body by helping your nervous system to snap out of a worked-up state.

Unfortunately, it is still a very common method to treat insomnia with pharmaceutically prescribed sleeping medications.  Around 9 million Americans rely on prescription drugs to help them fall asleep.  Even though these drugs can help the body to forcefully shut down, such tugging and pulling at natural rhythms come at the cost of severe side effects.  These can range from stomach pains to dizziness, impairment the following day, headaches, heartburn, and addiction.  Such over the counter drugs are also not easy for the liver, making it work overtime to metabolize and try to detoxify these chemicals.

Drastically sedating the body may work superficially, but is a very harmful solution to employ continuously.  Never mind the fact that many users report feeling drained and unrested the day after, regardless of long sleeping hours.  As opposed to prescription drugs, CBD oil works to complement the body's numerous, innate systems, and thus, allows the central and peripheral nervous system to settle into a state of rest through restoring balance (homeostasis). Let’s take a look at how CBD oil works on the human system when it comes to achieving healthy sleep.

CBD Oil for Insomnia

So what exactly does CBD oil do to help avoid sleeping disorders?  CBD is known to have a very positive impact on the human Endocannabinoid System. This system has been discovered in all mammals including humans fairly recently, thus it’s intricacies are not entirely uncovered yet.

However, it is known to be responsible for crucial bodily mechanisms such as mood, sleep rhythms, pain responses, inflammatory regulation, and the overall regulation of ensuring homeostasis. CBD from the Cannabis plant actually mimics the natural endocannabinoids that are produced by our bodies, such as anandamide, which is also known to be responsible for the “runners high” effect among other commonly termed "blissful" states.

CBD can fill the gaps in chains responsible for transferring biological signals throughout endocannabinoid system’s CB1 and CB2 receptors, scattered throughout the whole body.  By complementing and supporting the endocannabinoid system, it ensures that the body works as efficiently as possible when regulating the most vital processes.

CBD is also incredibly effective when it comes to reducing insomnia caused by anxiety issues.  A recent study investigated 72 adults who suffered from sleep problems due to nervousness.  After being administered CBD oil, anxiety scores went down by 79.2% and remained decreased during the period of the study. Sleeping scores were improved by 66.7% during that first month.

How Does CBD Affect The Endocannabinoid System?

Additional research shows that CBD oil helps to improve the stress response, resulting in a calmer and less agitated nervous system.  This leads to the body being more in tune with itself and its natural circadian (sleep) rhythms, resulting in a correction of sleep without any stress from drugs.

Additionally, countless anecdotal evidence of user testimonials worldwide suggests that CBD oil’s benefits were staggering enough that they even turned people’s lives around when usual medicines had failed.  Skeptics may say that such reports should be taken with a grain of salt.  However, just a few searches on community websites can lead to emotionally engaging stories and video reports that praise the Cannabis derivative as nothing short of a miracle when it came to solving issues with insomnia as well as a myriad of other physical and mental conditions.

How Much and When To Take CBD Oil For Better Sleep

Oftentimes, CBD bottles come without dosage instructions or a QR code on the label to see the batch’s lab test results for content.  And you might be wondering: how much CBD should I take?

The fact is that the CBD oil dosage for sleep effectively varies from one person to another, depending on their metabolic rate, weight, tolerance, and what strength CBD oil is used. The general rule is to calculate a starting dose of at least 25 mg for adults and children and increase it gradually until you notice the most beneficial results.

Clinical doses range from 50 mg to over 150 mg per day depending on the targeted condition and the individual patient's receptivity to CBD.  Yes, you ARE unique in this regard as well!

It helps to keep a journal to track your experiences and dosage. Rest assured that it is impossible to overdose with CBD, thus it is safe to experiment.  At very high doses, CBD may have some side effects like fatigue, stomach unease, and dizziness, but these are not all too common or severe to worry about at recommended dosages.

When choosing your options, consider that the best CBD oil for sleep is the one that is labeled as containing the “broad-spectrum”.  This means that the oil will not only contain CBD, but also many other cannabinoids and terpenes within the Cannabis plant, which will help you get a good night’s rest. It is up to your choice as to how to take CBD. Oil tincture is merely one option, but there are many variations for administering it. Some people prefer tinctures, edibles, suppositories, topical patches... or even sleep syrup form.

Above all, be sure to get a product of high quality. We recommend CBD Living products as well as trusted information sources with a good reputation.

It should be noted that for achieving the best sleep results, in addition to taking CBD, you should avoid various triggers that can cause sleeplessness.  These include stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine in the evening, excessive screen time before bed, and vigorous exercise in the evening hours.

Try to stay away from any screens at least an hour before going to bed and maintain a regular sleeping schedule.  In doing this, you will give CBD the chance to help your body achieve the best sleep in as efficient manner as possible.

Summary

If you are someone who suffers from any type of sleeping disorder, the great news is that there is an effective treatment to remedy it.  The scientific evidence, as well as the countless anecdotal reports, suggest that the prospects of curing insomnia are fantastic.

As with most great new discoveries, you have to experience them yourself to truly understand and appreciate them.  We highly suggest you consider CBD for insomnia and sleep disorders - especially if you are battling anxiety, depression, or insomnia.  Meanwhile, the National Institute of Medicine's studies have acknowledged the fact that opioid drug addictions are related to patients suffering from anxiety and sleep disorders including the long list of unwanted side effects of prescription medicatins.

If you have had any success with CBD like CBD Sleep Syrup, we would love to know about your results. Please leave your experiences in the comments below and tell us what tips you gathered along the way!
