My Rating: 10 out of 10

Many more of our members and visitors are now actively looking for better quality, plant-based protein supplements, so I decided to try a number of different products beyond the ones’ I’ve already used for myself.  And given our focus on hemp-based products at Cannabis Animus, I specifically wanted to identify a high-quality hemp protein powder that I would recommend for our members and visitors at a more competitive price.

For my daily supplementation, I’ve chosen this highly digestible, gluten-free, and non-GMO hemp seed protein powder from Foods Alive for my own use going forward. This product contains 7 grams of high-quality plant protein per serving and contains all 9 essential amino acids that the human body requires in adequate amounts.

Protein from hemp seeds is actually a preferred source of natural fiber most importantly it contains 3, 6, and 9 Omega fatty acids sourced from non-GMO farms in Canada.

A natural, cold-pressed manufacturing process is used which is free of hexane and never exposing the product to heat.

Hemp Seeds

Leading biochemists, researchers, and medical doctors alike agree that the hemp plant (Cannabis) is considered to be one of the most nutritious food sources on plant Earth.  For all the right reasons, organic hemp seed protein is the hands-down winner in the plant protein category, and understandably in high demand that is growing at a very rapid rate.

12 Benefits from Hemp Protein

  1. Immune System Stimulant
  2. Perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3
  3. Cardio Vascular Health with Arginine (produces nitic oxide)
  4. Synergistic Minerals: Calcium, Iron, Manganese, Magnesium & Zinc
  5. Builds and Repairs Muscle Tissues
  6. Bone and Teeth Strength
  7. More Digestible
  8. Binds to Cholesterol
  9. Prevents Sugar Spikes
  10. High Fiber Content Removes Toxins
  11. Positive and Sustainable Environmental Effects
  12. THC Free
Hemp Seed Protein Powder

As summarized above, this hemp protein powder from Foods Alive has many health benefits compared to soy, wheat, or other common forms of plant protein.  Hemp seed proteins are largely edestin and albumin.  Technically speaking, it’s a “nut” and shares common nutritional characteristics – just on a higher level.  Higher than chia seeds or quinoa for example.

Biochemistry shows that hemp seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids, and possess the ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega 6 (linolenic acid) to Omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids.  Additionally, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA) are included in the mix.  These are considered “essential fatty acids” (EFAs) because the human body cannot make them. Essential amino acids must be derived from our food intake and readily digested.

Essential Amino Acid Molecule

Hemp protein powder is a complete protein that contains over 20 amino acids which are the building blocks of protein itself.  Without the appropriate amount of protein, our muscles, bone, organs, and other tissues will not be healthy and one’s metabolism will slow and store fat instead of burning it.

How Much Should I Take?

Nutritionists suggest that adults need 0.38 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily.  However, if you are overweight, that much may be excessive.  Consult your nutritionist if you are overweight, and if you are underweight, same recommendation applies.

You may need more than the ratio for “average weight” folks depending on your overall medical condition, but for those of you who want to lose fat, your physician will definitely support your new focus on plant-based protein sources as opposed to what you’ve been doing.

If you exercise daily or are an athlete, you will need more than this ratio if you seek increased muscle mass and require muscle recovery after exercise or events.  According to the National Association of Sports Nutrition, you will require 0.9 grams per pound of body weight daily.

For optimal post-exercise, muscle rebuilding and recovery, my trainer recommends 4-6 tablespoons of Foods Alive Hemp Protein Powder in a ‘shake’ beverage immediately following workouts.

Hemp Protein and Athletes

Your Heart – Fiber Connection

Most of us are aware that heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States, and untold billions are made on the sale of products addressing the problem.  The underlying biological and chemical reasons for this sad state of affairs has been documented in the current, average American diet.

It’s been determined by numerous scientific studies, most Americans have an “unbalanced” ratio of omega-6 to omega-3.  Specifically they are low in omega-3 essential fatty acid which causes increased inflammation in the human body.

Hemp Vegitable Powder

Chronic inflammation conditions result in too many unnecessary (and most) medical conditions to list which is why so many people now take CBD every day!  Chronic neurological diseases are also caused by their own inflamed bodies… much of which can and does get corrected by many different kinds of hemp-based products .

Nutrition Support and “Gut Health”

As previously noted, hemp seeds contain many nutritional benefits beyond high fiber and high protein content.  They contain important unsaturated fats (good fat) that are essential for cardiovascular health (heart/blood).  Hemp seeds also contain critical minerals the body needs every day like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

The subject of “Gut Health” is currently at virtual peak of attention for anyone who “gets it”.

Most all health issues and unwanted conditions actually begin with how well your gut works and what you put in it.

Although I don't buy into all of his opinions or science, I still recommend that you consider reading this book ASAP... “The Longevity Paradox – How To Die Young At A Ripe Old Age” by Steven R. Gundry, MD .

The Lonngevity Paradox Book Cover

Within the first hour reading, the ‘light bulbs’ will have haven been lit, and you will want to continue learning why your gut health should likely be your primary concern and focus.  Without that understanding, you will never achieve your health objectives.  It’s really easy (and inexpensive) to achieve once you understand it.

Helpful Recipe Suggestions:

There are so many recipes for nutritional smoothie drinks that I’m not going to waste time here.  But one thing I want to emphasize is that unless you are an athlete, or otherwise maintain a healthy body mass ratio of muscle to fat, please stay away from the tendency to add too much fruit to your smoothies or fruit juices to your drinks.  All you should EVER add is is as little as possible to provide a nice, but subtle fruit flavor.  Trust me on this.

Use conservatively, just enough to ‘flavor’ your drink or shake.  Even fresh fruits and natural, fresh-pressed fruit juice contains a lot of sugar!

For example, this photo shows what is clearly too much fruit added in the blender.  It should have a more dull color.  Never should it look like these shown.

Hemp Protein Shakes

So, unless you can metabolize sugar like a young athlete, please don’t go there. It’s what is guaranteed to screw everything up!  Too much fruit and fruit sugar = Bad (very bad).  Read up on Triglycerides.  They are a bigger problem than high LDL.

For you chef's and bakers: Substitute 25% of your flour contents with Foods Alive Hemp Protein Powder in your recipes.  Not only better tasting due to the mild, nutty flavor, it provides some actual food value instead of low quality, gluten rich bleached flour.  Try it, and tell your customers about it!

Drug Testing?

Given the increased awareness and legalization of Cannabis as a medicine (i.e. Sativex (THC), Epidiolex (CBD) hemp protein powder has become more widely publicized, marketed, and consumed.

It is derived from the plant’s seed itself and does not contain any THC whatsoever.  So it is completely safe, non-addictive, and Foods Alive Hemp Protein Powder will not negatively impact a drug test.

Summary

I hope you can now realize why hemp protein powder derived from non-GMO, cold-processed hemp seed hearts is the best recommendation I can give our (free) members and visitors for immediately improving your gut health.

This simple addition to your daily health regimen will literally enable all the other products and foods you consume.  At 80% soluble fiber levels, this translates to slowing digestion while attracting life-giving water to the digestive process.

Its 20% insoluble fiber will help cleanse the colon wall and facilitate proper stool consistency while preventing watery elimination as well as its opposite – constipation.

As an Asian toxicologist friend reminds me with a smile, “You can see your ‘daily guide’ each morning!”

So, what’s your experience with hemp protein powder from hulled hemp seeds?

Please don’t leave if you have a question, or can leave a comment.  We all want to hear from you!

  1. Ted,
Alex, my son, and I have been making morning smoothies from the Hemp Protein Powder. We love it. He has added frozen peaches, frozen blueberries, fresh apples, fresh Kale (one day), fresh baby spinach (another day), steel cut oatmeal and the Chia seeds (I found ground). He also froze bananas so that with the other frozen fruit we would not need ice just added Almond milk for the liquid. Sometimes a touch of honey for a little sweet. They have been outstanding. Delicious and filling. I have only gained a pound and I know that is from the other wonderful food he has been cooking and freezing for me. Thank you, thank you. What a morning treat and mighty good for the gut too!

We both recommend it for anyone looking for a great breakfast experience. This would even make a great snack or a light supper.

    1. Hey- that’s terrific Tatum! Sounds like you guys really “got it”… what I was trying to share and suggest that is. 🙂 The fact that you are gaining a pound sure isn’t from fat! The hemp protein powder is increasing bone and muscle mass as you know! Thank you for sharing. I sure hope others are encouraged to use this inexpensive form of super-food. It can seriously change lives for the better in a relatively short period of time.
