As many of you probably already know, RSO is a common abbreviation for Rick Simpson Oil. RSO is a natural extract from the Cannabis plant consisting of phytochemicals, nutrients and various natural compounds such as cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and fatty acids. There are over 85 different cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant that have been identified by scientists. The most active and prevalent cannabinoids in Rick Simpson Oil are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).
Back in the late 60’s and 70’s, RSO was called “hash oil” or “honey oil”. Back then, Rick Simpson had not yet made the connection between this natural oil extract and curing himself and thousands of others of various forms of cancer. At the time, it was simply added on top of a pipe load of bud or smeared on a cigarette rolling paper prior to rolling and then smoking. Being an extract in concentrated form, it was an effective way of amplifying the high as well as enjoying its characteristically rich and distinctive flavors (flavonoids).
Rick Simpson Oil, or RSO, refers to the full-spectrum natural oils that are extracted with his “home grown”, signature process beginning with the dried flower tops (aka: buds, nuggs, marijuana) from the Cannabis indica species. Having a characteristically strong sedative effect, Cannabis indica typically contains in excess of 20% THC which is commonly known as the psychoactive yet cancer-cell-killing cannabinoid in marijuana. Other species like Cannabis sativa produces higher quantities of CBD, and is an antagonist cannabinoid to THC having its own distinctive healing and pain relieving effects. Its cousin “hemp” is yet another species called Cannabis ruderalis which has virtually no THC in the plant.
Although Rick Simpson often calls his product “hemp oil”, technically speaking, it is NOT made from the “commercial hemp” variety, Cannabis ruderalis. This is the classic industrial hemp variety that has been used since the beginning of mankind for everything from food to clothing. It is also the source of hemp oil which is rich in CBD, a healing cannabinoid that is non-psychoactive and used to treat neurological disease, seizures and a myriad of other disease symptoms.
In fact, healing medicine has been sourced from all of the Cannabis varieties and subsequently recorded by humans for thousands of years. The confusion lies in the fact that until the late 20th century, Cannabis was just another common word for hemp and vice-versa. The irony in calling hemp oil “RSO” is that commercial hemp oil has so little THC content that it is not ever used to produce RSO. Again, to be clear, Cannabis indica is the species recommended by Rick Simpson for his variety of healing oil.
Rick Simpson is a Canadian man who back in 2003 was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma (one of the forms of skin cancers from which I suffer and treat with RSO). Having experimented with ingesting Cannabis oil to treat other illnesses from which he suffered, Rick remembered a radio announcement stating that decades earlier in a medical study at the University of Virginia, THC had been found to cure cancer in laboratory rats.
The short story is that Rick decided to treat his skin cancer by applying the cannabis oil directly to his lesions. The result was as he had hoped. The cancer lesions disappeared, and this personal discovery that THC kills cancer in humans became his passion to share with others.
Ignored by physicians, he began to grow Cannabis on his own property, extracting the oil and giving it away free to as many patients as he could. And as has been the tradition with law enforcement in Canada as well, he was raided multiple times, and his plants were destroyed. Unaffected, Mr. Simpson continued to help others by showing others how to make Rick Simpson Oil and evangelizing its health and medical benefits.
Mr. Simpson claimed to not only have cured his cancer using his simple extraction and decarboxylation method and “recipe”, he personally helped thousands of patients since then heal from their cancers by ingesting about 1 gram of this potent cannabis extract per day. After proper extraction from the aforementioned species of indica, the RSO oil will measure over 90% THC content. This high level is necessary to effectively treat cancer, neurologic pain, disease and more. (See below “Benefits of Rick Simpson Oil).
On his website Phoenixtears.ca, Rick Simpson says he considers himself “one of many who has found a way to cure cancer and I certainly was not the first one to produce an essential oil from the hemp plant.” He goes on to say that he does believe he is the first to supply this form of medication to large numbers of people seeking treatment for their cancer.
“The only thing that I can really claim is that I discovered the proper way to produce and use this substance and I developed and published a protocol to make it more simple for patients to enjoy its use. As often as I could, I provided the medicine free of charge and I openly reported my findings to anyone who would listen, expecting that sooner or later someone would do something about it.” – Rick Simpson
Although it is completely reasonable to process as little as an ounce or two of cannabis, Rick describes the processing of about 1 pound of cannabis flower (aka bud) using the following tools and ingredients – all of which are readily available for anyone to make Rick Simpson Oil. One pound of good quality indica strain will typically yield about 2 ½ ounces of RSO.
The Rick Simpson Oil Recipe & Extraction Protocol
1 lb. Cannabis indica species (preferably over 20% THC minimum)
5 gallons of Solvent (naphtha or 99% isopropyl alcohol)
Two 5 gallon buckets (steel or plastic)
3 – 4 ft. length of wood for crushing and stirring flower material
A few smaller containers to filter out the solvent
Electric rice cooker to evaporate solvent
Large fan to keep fresh air moving
Stainless steel measuring cup
Hot Plate, oven or dehydrator to remove any remaining water and decarboxylate the oil for optimum potency (This is a critical step in determining the ultimate potency of the oil)
Plastic syringes (without needles) to draw, contain and dose the oil
Making Rick Simpson Oil is really quite easy and the protocol is described in more detail by Rick on his website at http://phoenixtears.ca/producing-the-oil/ . For your convenience, the following is provided as an abbreviated summary.
Put dry, indica flower tops ( all bud material – no trimmings or shake) into 5-gallon bucket
Moisten cannabis with your chosen solvent
Crush the plant material with bare wood stick device of your choice
Continue crushing while adding more solvent until all material is covered with solvent
Stir mixture and continue crushing for 5 more minutes which removes the resins (phytonutrients, flavonoids, terpenes, and cannabinoids such as THC and CBD) from the plant
Pour the solvent into the other 5-gallon bucket
Repeat the process to extract the remaining nutrients
Pour and add to first wash solvent material bucket
Pour solvent and oil through coffee filter
Boil off solvent using a rice cooker (*Understand all cautionary instructions, flammable material management, and safety procedures before performing this step)
Continue to add solvent material to cooker as the prior boils off. Maintain ventilation with fan, etc.
When most all solvent is boiled off, add 10 drops of water per pound of dry Cannabis used which protects the desired residue and helps release the last of the solvent
Pour remaining contents in the rice cooker into another smaller stainless steel container
Decarboxylate* the oil by using a dehydrator or heating pad at low heat until no surface activity remains (bubbling)
While warm, vacuum up the oil with plastic syringes and cap off until ready for use.
*Decarboxylating the oil for optimum potency
Following is a summary of the main points that Mr. Simpson covers on his website regarding dosage related issues. He explains that it takes the average person about 90 days to complete his regimen. The “standard” Rick Simpson Oil dosage program requires ingesting 60 grams (or 60 ml) of RSO over approximately 90 days beginning with 3 doses per day (about the size of a grain of rice squeezed from the syringe).
Dosage intervals are 8 hours apart (morning, afternoon and evening). After about 4 days of getting used to any potential psychoactive effects of RSO, most patients are ready to start increasing their daily dosage. It is recommended to try and double the dosage every 4 days or so until the patient reaches 1 gram per day.
Generally speaking, Rick says it will take the average person from 3 to 5 weeks to be able to ingest the end goal dose of 1 gram per day. He acknowledges that everyone’s different in this regard, but it has been often observed that people who work up slowly like this do not experience any undesirable psychoactive (high) effects… and that, by definition, still means that others will experience some euphoric effects. Regardless, the sedative effects are unavoidable, but good rest is required for optimal healing.
Along those lines, Rick shares that he has observed patients who had no inhibitions or concern for caution about THC were able to ingest the entire 60 grams within one month and subsequently be declared cancer free. This has been documented by thousands of Rick’s own personal experiences with his patients.
Furthermore, he points out that when it comes to RSO, there is no relationship between a person’s weight and their ability to tolerate larger doses of this medication. In fact, even children patients can take the same dose as adults. Here’s a very current video with Rick explaining the entire process of making Rick Simpson Oil.
Rick Simpson is often criticized by the medical community for his claim that ingesting 1 gram of extract product using his protocol will cure just about anything that ails ya. So I challenge any medical professional to show me that it doesn’t. I’m as fed up as anyone about the spiraling costs of healthcare. This list is representative of only a small example of the benefits of Rick Simpson Oil.
